Bulk Density & Moisture Testing

Right Method. Right Material. IS Code Compliant.

Every material behaves differently. Fines need tap density meters. Aggregates need large cylinders. We match the right testing methodology to your specific material - all compliant with Indian Standards.

Why Bulk Density & Moisture Matter

Converting volume to tonnage requires accurate density. Moisture affects weight and value.

Without Proper Testing

  • Using assumed density values from textbooks
  • Same density applied to all material types
  • Ignoring moisture content variations
  • Tonnage calculations off by 10-20%
  • Disputes with buyers over delivered quantity

With Our Testing

  • Material-specific density determination
  • Right method for each material type
  • Accurate moisture (water) content analysis
  • IS code compliant documentation
  • Defensible tonnage calculations

Testing Methods

Material-specific methodologies following Indian Standards

Bulk Density Testing

Tap Density Method

For: Fines & Powders (<3.5mm)

Graduated cylinder with mechanical tapping device. Measures both loose (poured) and tapped density to determine compaction characteristics.

  • Materials: Coal fines, iron ore fines, limestone powder & powdered minerals
  • Output: Loose density, Tapped density, Hausner ratio
  • Standard: ASTM D7481

Large Cylinder Method

For: Aggregates & Large Particles

Calibrated large cylinders with known volume. Material is weighed and filled to determine bulk density under different compaction states.

  • Materials: Iron ore lumps, Limestone, Aggregates, Coal
  • Output: Free-flow, Semi-compact, Compact density
  • Standard: IS 5842, IS 2386 Part 3

Weighing & Sampling

For: All Material Types

Precision weighing of representative samples collected as per IS standards. Multiple samples ensure statistical reliability.

  • Equipment: Calibrated scales, Sample containers
  • Output: Weight per unit volume
  • Standard: IS 1405, IS 436

Moisture Content Testing

Moisture = Water content in the material. Critical for accurate dry tonnage calculation.

Oven Drying Method

For: Coal, Iron Ore, All Minerals

Sample dried at 105-110°C until constant weight. Weight loss determines moisture (water) content as percentage.

  • Temperature: 105-110°C controlled environment
  • Output: Total moisture %, Inherent moisture %
  • Standard: IS 1350-1, IS 1405

Rapid Moisture Analysis

For: Quick On-Site Testing

Halogen or infrared moisture analyzers for rapid results. Ideal for operational decisions requiring quick turnaround.

  • Time: Results in 10-15 minutes
  • Output: Moisture % with digital readout
  • Accuracy: ±0.1% moisture content
